Phaenobjects

The term phenobject was coined by Frank Oppenheimer, founder of the EXPLORATORIUM in San Francisco. The aim of phenobjects is to make natural phenomena perceptible. A dome, echoing the sound of applause, is as much a phenobjects as the Foucaulian pendulum or an artificially produced miniature tornado. Many phenobjects are interactive, which means that they allow intervention and navigation by the visitor. Unfortunately, many concepts for such phenobjects fail due to the fact that they want to show and explain too much, or because they expect of the visitor the ability to see things in an abstract context which is simply too difficult.
